Resumo

This Industrial doctoral dissertation aims to comprehensively document and analyse the experience gained during the construction of the largest tunnelling project underneath the City of London. The ultimate objective of this study is to identify patterns and trends that can be leveraged to advance the state of the art in tunnelling practices and inform the design and execution of future projects. With a commitment to technical accuracy and industry-specific expertise, this thesis will thoroughly assess the construction methodology, geology, performance of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the volume loss, and project management strategies employed during the project's execution, seeking to establish potential correlations that enhance our understanding of the soil-TBM interaction. By synthesizing the findings from this investigation, this study aims to provide valuable guidance to the tunnelling industry and advance the state of tunnel construction technology. The recommendations derived from this research will be founded on sound engineering principles and backed by practical, real-world experience, making them highly relevant and actionable for industry professionals. In short, this Industrial doctoral dissertation represents a unique and invaluable contribution to the tunnelling industry, comprehensively examining the challenges and opportunities associated with large-scale tunnel construction projects and offering a road-map for future improvements and innovations
