Resumo

This paper is intended as a new contribution and an update on an interesting question that has intrigued historiography for centuries. Questions about the nature of Augustus’ regime have attracted the attention of historians since the 19th century (Mommsen, 1876-1888; Puchta, 1882; Kromayer, 1888; Pellham, 1888; Abele, 1891; Gardthausen, 1896; Bonfante, 1902; Betti, 1915; Dessau, 1924; Von Premerstein, 1937, and a long etc.). The imperial position has traditionally been considered to have been constituted by a series of individual elements that, if taken together, would have given great powers to its holder without creating a new institution. Among the main powers held by Augustus and his successors, the imperium, the control of a number of provinces, and the tribunicia potestas have been singled out. In this paper, attention will be directed to towards the first of these elements, since, within this broad subject, the definition of the characteristics of the imperium of the first princeps occupies a central place. The confusion in the events after the year 31 BC and the actions and dispositions of Augustus do not help to clarify the facts, so it is therefore extremely difficult to attribute each imperial intervention to a particular power. In the following paper, my intention is to outline the events that followed the seizure of supreme power, explaining, through the different perceptions of the main expert authors on the subject, the interpretations that have been given so far to the shaping of the imperium of the princes. Although my analysis of the subject is deeply historiographic, it does also include a new and particular view that aims to keep this centenarian issue alive, as it is far from being concluded.
