Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the relevant management variables that explain the performance of Spanish football clubs in the First Division. To do so, a comprehensive analysis of the literature was carried out on the contents relating to the variables associated with the management of football clubs. Thereafter, the contents were grouped into six thematic sections that a group of experts verified as a validity check and to give a collective consensus on the variables and models to further research. For the empirical study we worked with data from the football clubs in the Spanish First Division between seasons 2007-2008 and 2009-2010. Finally, a regression analysis was conducted on the data to understand and verify the proposed models. The paper concludes that, individually, the existence of an address and / or department operations; gains in the previous season; the number of games played in European competitions; and the league position reached; significantly affect net profit. Also, the number of European players, financial expenses and net profit of the previous season, act as a joint model that would affect the chances of profit for the clubs.
