Resumo

The search of the suitable technology to treat wastewater remains a challenge that is magnified due to the increasingly complex feature of effluents. Overall, this work contributes to the study of the main operational variables of electrochemical oxidation and photocatalysis tecnhologies for the treatment of some emerging contaminants, such as the phenolic compounds bisphenol A and p-cresol, the acid blue BR dye and the herbicide atrazine. In the ELOX, the most cost-effective material and experimental conditions are offered. On the other hand, the advantages of the photocatalysis when using efficient lighting systems and new modified catalysts with materials which are attractive considering the availability and cost are pointed out. The results achieved with the coupling of both technologies via photoelectrocatalysis constitute a preliminary stage to study the feasibility of the technology and motivates further research before its deployment at industrial scale.
