Abstract

Self-concept and academic performance are factors to be taken into account when developing the adolescent child. The objective of this quantitative review will be to verify the extent to which these variables would relate with the probability of occurrence or maintenance of criminal behavior in young people and how they become a key element for the analysis of the same. The possibility that parental educational styles, self-concept and academic performance influence juvenile delinquency, becomes a matter of interest from an educational point of view. Knowing how these variables can be conducive to the development of criminal behavior or protect the adolescent before them, is of high interest from the point of view of educational intervention. To carry out this review, there were 22 primary reports that deal with the study of delinquency, 10 related to parental styles, 6 with self-concept and 6 with academic performance. Results indicate that the democratic educational style is negatively related to juvenile delinquency and that low self-concept and academic performance have a positive relationship. Results of this quantitative review could be used in future research that allows a much more detailed and expanded analysis of the data reflected here.
