Resumo

The objective of this study was to assess the pollution degree and the effect of potentially toxic element content on the germination and growth of Sinapis alba L. in soils developed on the tailings from a serpentinite and am- phibolite quarry. For this purpose three soils from a quarry of serpentinite and amphibolite were selected, sam- pled, and analysed. The Ni and Cr contents exceed the generic reference levels for industrial use. The pollution degree by Cr and Ni varies between high and low; depending on the geochemical background value. Pollution by Co ranges between low to medium, although the total contents do not exceed the generic reference levels for industrial use. Bioassays showed that the high total Cr concentration in the studied soils adversely affects the S. alba growth, while the Co content and the extremely high Ni concentration do not have direct effect on the lengths of the seedling and root. The available Cr contents have a negative influence on the growth of seedling and root, although they affect less intensely than those of Co. However, bioassays indicate that the concentration opera- tionally so-called available Ni content does not exert any negative effect.
