Abstract

Three areas that receive the highest amounts of bulletsresidues were selected in a small arms firing range. Three surface soil samples (0-20 cm) from each area were taken, which they were characterized thoroughly. The objec- tives were to determine the hazardous elements content in them, to evaluate their toxicity and to determine the effectiveness of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles addition in their decrease.A suspension at neutral pH, of Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2of acicular morphology (whose purity and size are 99% and 20 nm respectively) was prepared. The suspension was added to each soil so that, once it was treated, the nanoparticles/soil ratio was 5% by weight.Toxicity tests were performed by means the Phytotoxkitwith each soil, treated and untreated with nanopar- ticles. Therefore the germination index of Sinapisalba L., Lactuca sativa L. y Festucaovina L. was determined. The results indicate that the soils are heavily polluted by Pb, highly by Cu, and moderately by Zn.It was found that the nanoparticles addition increases the germination index of species used; indicating that this treatment decreases soil toxicity.
