Resumo

Based on a review of research on smoking initiation, the paper lists the main cognitive-behavioural variables influencing this behaviour. Current research supports that preadolescents or adolescents with: distorted beliefs about tobacco, a positive attitude towards it and towards smoking, and who additionally have had some previous experience with this behaviour, are at a greater risk of starting to smoke (or to continue doing so) than subjects without these characteristics.
