After presenting a general approach to humour references in Medieval English Literature —paying special attention to the Old English period— and a brief overview on both the Exeter Book and the concept of riddle in Old English, this article intends to study how humour works in the sexual/obscene riddles from the Exeter Book: riddles 25, 44, 45, 54 and 61. After offering such analysis, some final reflections will be offered. The main aim of this final part is to consider if the way humour works in the riddles could influence other similar forms of humour present in contemporary English culture.
