Resum

Objective: To identify the main risk factors for postpartum depression. Search strategy: Systematic review of Medline and CINAHL data bases during the month of February 2012. Fifteen articles published between January 2007 and January 2012 were selected. Their sample was composed of women of 19-44 years of age and for whom the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was applied. Study selection: Inclusion criteria established were: scientific articles published in the last five years, that the sample was composed of women 19 to 44, that the EPDS was used as a clinical rating scale, that the full-text was available and accessible. Exclusion criteria were no reply to our research question, that they were repeated in other databases and they did not meet some of the inclusion criteria. A second filter was performed in Medline. Summary of results: Fundamentally risk factors include maternal age, personal history of depression and lack of social and family support. Furthermore, it was observed that in some studies the results were influenced by cultural factors. Conclusion: Prevention, identification and immediate action on those modifiable risk factors should take top priority in efforts to prevent postpartum depression.
