Abstract

Since the beginning of radio broadcasting in Spain, cultural programmes took up a significant place. After an earlier experimental phase, cultural contents – like guidance, educational, and disclosure programmes - increased their importance among radio programming, until the birth of the third channel and the autonomic radios, which were conceived as tools for the promotion and development of culture and the idiosyncrasy of the Autonomic Communities. This paper presents the outcomes of a quantitative study on the cultural programming in the autonomic public radio in Spain. During 2003 and 2004, the study carried out a comparative analysis of the programming frames of the following public autonomic radio broadcasters: Radio Galega, Telemadrid Radio, Onda Sur, Euskadi Radio, Radio Nou, and Radio Catalunya. The main findings of this study highlight the presence of cultural programming in all autonomic radio stations, in three specific timeframes, and a majority of musical and disclosure programmes among their cultural contents.
