Resumo

The concern generated in Spain by the increase of cases of violence against women has had a positive effect both amongst legislators and amongst the media professionals directly involved in the problem. Thus limiting the effect of two of the main social evils concerning the problem: its imperceptibility in society and the lack of references to provide possible solutions, preventive measures. The measures aimed at the recovery of victims has had a key role in social fields, closest to women. Measures directed to raise awareness in media professionals, and consequently in society as a whole, about the reasons behind it, signs of the problem and ways to put an end to it have worked together immensely to bring the matter into the public eye. Thirteen years have passed since Ana Orantes was assassinated, which is considered to be the turning point marking the beginning of a new way of dealing with domestic violence in Spain, armed with knowledge. What is the status quo of the matter in Galicia? We have analysed how the media treat domestic violence against women nowadays, in light of style guides which are commonly accepted by the profession. The results obtained with our content analysis show an inconsistent follow up of ethic recommendations by media and a large prevalence of some defects.
