Resumo

The aim of this paper is to explore the possibility of carrying out performance measurements in the public health system in order to apply them to the medical division of apublic hospital. The first step was to collect all indicators which could be used as management tools for evaluation, monitoring, and control. The increasing interest in the measurement of performance in the public health system is mainly due to an increase in health expenses, a rise in expectation levels by the general population, and the need to obtain optimum results from invested resources. This general trend has affected public hospitals in Spain as well as private ones. While the measurement of efficiency is not an easy task in private companies, it is even more complicated in the public health system because it is more difficult to standarise the processes. Moreover, public hospitals usually have various different objectives, such as increasing quality and reducing expenses.
