Resumen

A key factor in the interpretation of environmental studies is the establishment of a suitable geochemical background for heavy metals in sediments. The application of principal component analysis (PCA) allowed us to identify the factors controlling the metal content in the sediments. In addition, PCA was a very useful tool to define background values for some heavy metals in the Ria de Vigo. These values are compared with previous values given by other authors. Signs of pollution were detected for Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and in lesser grade Fe by calculating contamination factors. The spatial extension and pollution status of the Ria was assessed with the calculation of a metal pollution index.
