Resumo

At first glance, the number of speakers of a language is not a relevant factor as it does not essentially affect the structure of a language, nor show the degree of ease or difficulty in its learning. .either does it give information about how old, how rich, nor how healthy it is. As we know, the number of speakers of a language, be it great or small, is mainly influenced by social and non-linguistic issues. The title of the presentation is also the first question that computer scientists ask us when we propose designing a sign language corpus. This happens due to the fact that creating a corpus of any language involves a representative selection of speakers as well as of speech samples. Once again, the study of sign languages leads us to the linguistic reflection required to respond to matters that influence the answer to the question regarding the number of Spanish sign language users. Who are the native speakers of sign languages and how did they get there?
