Resumo
Observability and structural identifiability are classic systemic properties that describe whether it is theoretically possible to determine the state and parameter vectors of a model from its output. Recently we developed a MATLAB tool, STRIKE-GOLDD, which adopts a symbolic approach for analysing observability and structural identifiability of nonlinear ODE models. While being a general purpose tool, the motivation behind the development of STRIKE-GOLDD was the study of biological models, for which these analyses can provide very valuable insight. This paper demonstrates the application of STRIKE-GOLDD to a dynamic model of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which plays an important role in processes such as immunity, cell division, cell death and tumour formation. Using this model of biomedical relevance as a case study, the present paper provides a tutorial on the use of the STRIKE-GOLDD methodology, highlighting its capabilities and limitations.
