Abstract
The accident of Prestige oil tanker in 2002 affected numerous sandy beaches, being Nemiña beach (NW Spain) one of the most polluted. This work showed the monitoring study from the accident at present on that beach, paying special attention in the area of greater accumulation of oil, the north area. Six fieldworks were carried out where 16 suction cores were extracted in the intertidal area. Furthermore, during fieldworks the surface oil (tar-balls) recurrent arrival was reported. The core processing in the laboratory allowed identifying buried oil at different depths, reaching the maxima depth of extraction, with the oil morphologies from millimeter-long tar-balls to oil coatings (grey sands). Nevertheless, the surface and subsurface oil distribution were linked with the previous oceanographic conditions. In this way, there is a relationship between the beach morphodynamic state and the oil buried appearance.
