Resumo

This paper traces the history of the translation of the Communist Manifesto into Catalan from 1930 to the present day, highlighting the important role played by translation in the spread and impact of the Manifesto, a text that occupies an important place in the field of translation studies. By applying the concept of ‘paratranslation’, derived by applying the notion ‘paratext’ to translation studies, this research analyses the dozen existing translations in Catalan seen as global objects with a view to shedding light on the intended function underlying each transla-tion via a comparison of a series of paratextual elements (cover, graphics, prologues, etc.). The results of the analysis lead to the conclusion that while all of the translations ultimately derive from the same source text, they do not all serve the same function in the target group. Thus, the different versions of the Manifesto in Catalan can be loosely grouped into several different types: the majority intended as a call to action for the working class, as opposed to others with commemorative historical, academic or didactic ends, etc
