Abstract

This article delves into the variety of functions fulfilled by social networks in the context of health. Facebook continues to be the social network with the most users worldwide and is therefore the object of analysis of the official accounts of public health organizations in five European Union countries. The aim of the study is to identify how these health institutions communicate, analyzing their profiles with nearly 2000 publications from 2017. There are notable differences in terms of volume and pace of publications per country, as well as engagement levels. Audiovisual content stands out and similarities are observed in terms of the pathologies about which information is published. No common pattern is detected in terms of engagement, so it can be inferred that the contents are marked by national agendas.
