Abstract

This thesis is a unique contribution to the study of invertebrate s zooarchaeology through the undertaken analysis in the sediments of deposit in Tabacalera site (Gijón, Asturias, 5th to 8th centuries). The work provides one of the Iberian Peninsula’s richest subfossil microinvertebrate collection which includes organisms from the Bryozoa, Crustacea, Diptera, Coleopteora and Oribatida groups. This collection has been analyzed through conventional zooarcheology methods, including identification and quantification of the remains, biometric analyses and envirnonmental inferences. The paper also contains analyses of microinvertebrates fauna remains, seeds and fruits which have been recovered with the implemented extraction techniques. The results provide both methodological and theoretical data about the extraction methods of subfossil remains as well as the reconstruction of the deposit use and abandonment sequence, the environment, the ecosystem and the landscape near the Roman building, based on the stratigraphic section (5th to 8th century).
