Resumo

In the Ancient World, and specifically in Roman civilization, the conubium was presented as an exclusive legal competence of States. In the monarchy, marriages between Roman citizens were recognized and legitimized by the community of Quirites. In the later stages, by the Res publica. Without common conubium of the betrothed, the nuptials were and followed the principles of the law of nations. According to this position, the legal nature of the conubium could be placed in the orbit of public international law and private international legal relations. Conubium regulated and made fair mixed marriages between citizens of different nationalities.
