Doctor by the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela with the thesis Estudio faunístico, autoecológico y biogeográfico de los tunicados bentónicos de la Ría de Ferrol (Galicia) 1993. Supervised by Dr. Victoriano Urgorri.
I defended my doctoral thesis at USC in 1993 on taxonomy and biogeography of Ascidiaceans, resulting in 9 JCR publications. Then I did a 2-year postdoctoral stay at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, Florida, with Dr. Young, focused on the study of the effects of environmental factors on the larval behavior of benthic invertebrates in addition to continue working on taxonomy and biogeography of Ascidiaceans. At this stage we published in Nature (1996) the embryonic and larval development of Vestimentifera related to Polychaetes for the first time. In 1996 I joined the Dept. of Animal Ecology and Biology at UVIGO as a PhD Assistant where, 16 years later, I got the Chair of Zoology. During my first stage, we started a research line in marine ecotoxicology elaborating protocols for bioassays with embryos and larvae of marine invertebrates defining lethal and sublethal limits for contaminants. At the same time I studied the biogeography of the ascidiofauna of the southern hemisphere and investigated benthic-pelagic coupling in the Antarctic. In 2005 I started with the study of the reproductive biology and physiology of invertebrates of commercial interest such as barnacles, cockles and razor clams that derived, from 2014, in collaboration with Dr. Wethey and Woodin at U. South Carolina and Dr. Olabarria, in my current main line of research on the effect of extreme events on the life cycle and physiology of bivalves, and its application to make shellfishing a sustainable activity. In parallel we study the effects of global change on rocky substrate species including the effects of global change on the life cycle of Semibalanus balanoides and the biology of the invasive mussel Xenostrobus securis. I was PI of 5 research contracts, 4 grants to competitive research groups (Xunta de Galicia), 4 regional projects, 4 national, 2 European (Marie Curie Programme COFUND; BiodivERsA3 2015-2016, EU-HORIZON 2020/MINECO), and participated in international cooperation programs. I teach since 1995 in the degree in Marine Sciences and in masters (Aquaculture and Oceanography). I was coordinator of the international PhD program in Marine Sciences, Technology and Management (DOMAR). I have supervised 6 postdoctoral researchers. In addition to 10 supervised theses, I hosted 6 doctoral students during their training stays. In 2009-10 I was Vice-Rector for Research and, between 2011-2018, Director of Talent Recruitment at CEI Campus do Mar. From 2016 to 2021 I was part of the A4 Commission of Accreditation of Titular/Catedrático (ANECA). Since 2018 I am Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Marine Sciences and member of the University Senate since 2010 of which I was vice-president from 2010-2018.
