Abstract

Over the last few decades the living conditions of the Galicians have undergone a considerable improvement. In any case, even today we see a significant differential in respect of the rest of Spain and the European Union in income levels, infrastructure and public services. In addition, in spite of the process of convergence that has been taking place throughout the last quarter century, the urban- rural dimension continues to be the main discriminatory aspect between Galician households. Thus, we may identify a more urban Galicia, located around the Atlantic Highway (Autopista del Atlántico), linked to industry and the services, higher activity rates, a stronger demographic impulse, richer but at the same time less egalitarian; opposed to this, a more rural Galicia away from the main paths of communication, with low activity rates, more linked to the farming and/or fishing sectors, with less value added, with a very aged population and, therefore, poorer but more egalitarian
